Mirror Meditation


A simple meditation technique that uses a mirror and can be done anywhere



Getting Started:

Item Needed

Find a mounted mirror in your house, or a portable one will work that can stand on its own.
It would be most preferable to do this in quiet and with a mirror that is a good size where you can sit or stand by it.

Ready?

Get comfortable standing or sitting near the mirror.
Follow the steps below or listen to the guided audio.
Since you are learning this might not seem too natural at first, but just have the experience.

Step One

With your eyes closed get in a meditative state by connecting to the present moment as deeply as possible.  Meaning, start becoming aware of all that is right now without needing anything to be a certain way.

Here are some good things to focus on:

-Become aware of the breath flowing in and out of the body.
-Feel all the sensations in and outside of the body that are happening in this very moment.

-Allow all the sounds to be without wanting them to be gone, be different, or needing to classify them.
-See all the colors and movement that are occurring for you even with your closed eyes in this very moment without judgments or other intellectual jargon.

Once you have been able to establish a connection to the present move to the next step.



Step Two

Open your eyes and start observing all that you see in the mirror without trying to understand or control anything. Let go of any mind stuff, just be the observer of all that is without needing anything to be otherwise.  Notice the shapes and colours that are there being reflected to you.

As you are looking in the mirror notice all the judgements done by the mind.

It will say things like:

How this part of your face doesn’t look good.
-This new pimple is ugly.
Why is the nose so big or is crooked.
How your hair isn’t laying how it should.
And gazillion other things of this nature.
It might even go the other route, which is less likely, and tell you how you look so good and obsess on that part.

This is all content of the mind that will be happening, and it will try continuously to grab your attention. In this meditation we are not interested in that, but in just being the observer of all these happenings, rather then defending or involving yourself in the drama of these stories.

Be alert of the mind trying to come in constantly and grab attention.  If thoughts and emotions are present just accept them fully and don’t fight or try to change them. If you aren’t happy with what you see, that is okay, but just continue to observe with a distance from the analytics.

If you loose yourself at any moment in mind land, put your attention on how the feet feel touching the floor, or how your butt feels sitting because that will get you back into this moment. You are always in this moment, but your attention is mostly occupied in nonsense and you suffer it.



Step Three

Once you are able to establish a connection to something deeper and not just be consumed by the mind. Start to focus your attention through the mirror into the eyes and just continue to do this as long as possible.  Just observe without needing anything to happen.



Step Four

Ask yourself who is this in the mirror? and just continue to look without the mind’s answers.  Just observe.



Step Five

If you do this while staying very alert and maintaining a deep connection to the now, you might get to the point where you start to create some distance from your believed “self” and start touching a dimension of yourself outside of the additions that have been placed on top of reality by the mind.



Benefits

The whole reason for these types of exercises is to try and shake your beliefs about who you are and what is real.  You have to understand that the mind creates a world for us on top of actual reality and then we assume that is how it is.  Here, we are focusing on getting outside of the mind and trying to establish a connection with the most fundamental.

At the fundamental you are whole and that space exists for you always!

Touching this space replenishes your energies and allows you to fall once again in love with life, in love with yourself. This is not an ego thing, it’s just a connection to the ultimate.

For many, the connection has been vailed. Good news! It’s always there, you just need to experience it directly to realize this fundamental Truth.
