A while ago, I wrote this piece on the power of music for me.
Here’s the thing. I love music SO much, that one piece could never suffice. So as an update to that post, I present you with a list of more feel-good moments in movies that involve some pretty great tunes and pretty sweet acting.
May your spirits be lifted – you’re welcome!
- In The Skeleton Twins, Bill Hader decides to cheer up his sister, Kristen Wiig by mouthing along to “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now”. The movie itself is pretty dark and sad, but in this moment, it’s pure joy.
- In this ‘80s classic, Jon Cryer tries to woo Molly Ringwald by lip-syncing and performing an energetic dance to “Try A Little Tenderness”. (How could I not include this on the first post?! Pretty In Pink was my favourite!)
- In this scene, Tom Cruise has just swindled some people out of money while playing pool. And to say he does it with swagger is an understatement. (Sometimes, I randomly think of the line: “and his hair was perfect” while in the shower – true story.)
- Okay, so this is really just turning into an 80s thing right now, but so be it. Ferris Bueller charmed us all with not one, but TWO songs while performing on a German float.
- We need to get a little more woman-power on this list… Sooo here’s Amy Schumer trying to win back Bill Hader (yes, him again) in Trainwreck. For those of who you haven’t see the movie, Bill’s character had previously accused her of not liking “fun” things in life like cheerleaders or Billy Joel. So, she combines both to prove him wrong.
- On Christmas Day, I remember watching Stepmom in the theatre with my parents when it came out. It’s one of the few movies we all saw together. It’s a pretty heartwarming scene complete with bedroom shenanigans and a promise that there “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough”
- Somewhere, my high school best friend is cheering me on for this. He loved The First Wives Club – so as a virtual hug to him, here’s Goldie Hawn, Diane Keaton, and Bette Midler doing their rendition of “You Don’t Own Me”
- Okay, out of the ‘80s and ‘90s again… remember that great musical scene in 8 Mile? No, not the rap battles. That’s too predictable. We don’t like predictable here. I mean this one, obviously.
- Errr, let’s rewind once more… In The Color Purple, there’s a really great moment where a woman who was banished away from her community decides that she belongs in her family, and church just as much as anyone else does. So, she makes an entrance to re-assert her place after years of being away.
There we have it – for now. Life without music is blah. Go forth peeps. Enjoy some fun tunes and some lighthearted scenes.
