Surya Namaskar – Sun Salutation

Surya Namaskar – Sun Salutation

A good practice to add to your morning routine.  It’s quite simple to learn and gets the energies in your body moving.

It consists of 12 asanas or poses

1. Prayer Pose – Pranamasana
2. Raised Arms Pose – Hastauttanasana
3. Hand to Foot Pose – Hasta Padasana
4. Equestrian Pose – Ashwa Sanchalanasana
5. Downward Dog Pose – Adho Mukha Svanasana
6. Four-Limbed Staff Pose – Chaturanga Dandasana
7. Cobra Pose – Bhujangasana
8. Downward Dog Pose – Adho Mukha Svanasana
9. Equestrian Pose – Ashwa Sanchalanasana (opposite leg forward)
10. Hand to Foot Pose – Hasta Padasana
11. Raised Arms Pose – Hastauttanasana
12. Prayer Pose – Pranamasana

(*Depending on what source one is looking some of the poses differ slightly)

Best to do a couple of rounds of this practice at whatever pace that suits your needs.  If you feel tighter then you can hold the pose a bit longer or if you want more of a flow type practice then go from pose to pose fairly quickly.  Remember to breath!
